‘Deadpool’ Marks Third Week Atop Home-Video Charts

Four theatrical newcomers break into DVD, Blu-ray Disc Top 10

Twentieth Century Fox’s “Deadpool” remained the top home video seller for the third consecutive week, despite four new theatrical films coming to Blu-ray Disc and DVD last week – all of which ended up in the top 10 on the national sales charts for the week ending May 29.

Sony Pictures’ “Risen,” the latest Biblical epic about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, debuted at No. 2 on both the NPD VideoScan overall disc sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Risen” stars Joseph Fiennes as a Roman “Tribune” charged with tracking down rumors of a Nazarene who rose from the dead. The film, directed by Kevin Reynolds (“Fandango,” “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”), earned $36.9 million in U.S. theaters.

Close behind, with a No. 3 debut on the overall disc chart (and a No. 7 bow on the Blu-ray Disc chart), was Warner’s “How to Be Single,” a romantic comedy with $46.8 million in domestic box office earnings.

The Finest Hours,” an actioner, distributed by Walt Disney Studios, about a daring rescue at sea during a fierce storm, debuted at No. 6 on both charts. The comedy sequel “Zoolander 2,” from Paramount, followed at No. 7 (and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart).

The Finest Hours” stars Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Eric Bana and grossed $28.8 million in U.S. theaters. “Zoolander 2,” a belated sequel to the 15-year-old original, finds Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson reprising their roles as male models Derek and Hansel – compared to more than $45 million for the original back in 2001.

In its eighth week in stores, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” remains in the top five, finishing the week at No. 4 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. Lionsgate’s “Dirty Grandpa” finished the week at No. 5 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, after debuting the prior week at No. 2 on both charts.

Of the four new releases, “Zoolander 2” fared best with the high-def crowd, with 52% of total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc. Next came “The Finest Hours,” at 41%, followed by “Risen” (40%) and “How to Be Single” (30%).

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, Universal Pictures’ “Ride Along 2” shot up to No. 1 now that its 28-day holdback from Redbox is over, bumping “The Revenant,” from 20th Century Fox, to No. 2.

Dirty Grandpa” slipped a notch to No. 3, while “Zoolander 2” debuted at No. 4 and “Risen” bowed at No. 5.
