‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Finding Dory’ Push Disney to International Box Office Record

Disney has set a new record for its highest-grossing year at the international box office, fueled by “Captain America: Civil War,” “Finding Dory,” “Zootopia,” and “The Jungle Book.”

Disney’s international total reached $3.566 billion as of Sunday, slightly surpassing their previous record of $3.565 billion in 2015. The studio still has three major releases this year — Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” begins its international rollout on Oct. 25 ahead of its Nov. 4 domestic debut; Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana” opens on Nov. 23; and Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” debuts on Dec. 16.

On July 6, Disney set a new industry record for reaching the $3 billion threshold internationally. Disney also set new industry milestones for reaching $2 billion domestically on July 16 and $5 billion globally on July 10.

Three Disney titles topped $1 billion worldwide this year — Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” with $1.15 billion; “Zootopia” with $1.02 billion; and “Finding Dory” with $1.01 billion.

Disney’s live-action “The Jungle Book” has grossed $966 million globally, including $602.3 million internationally.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which debuted in December, brought in $452.4 million of its $1.13 billion international total in 2016.
