Brie Larson Making Directorial Debut, Starring in Comedy ‘Unicorn Store’

Brie Larson will star in, produce, and make her directorial debut on the independent comedy “Unicorn Store.”

Other producers are David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer through their company The District, Paris Kasidokostas-Latsis and Terry Dougas. Jean-Luc De Fanti and Anne Woodward are exec producing.

Hercules Film Fund is financing the film and Rhea Films is producing.

“Unicorn Store,” written by Samantha McIntyre, centers on a woman who moves back in with her parents. She receives an invitation to a store that will test her ideas of what it really means to grow up.

The filmmaking team is planning to begin shooting in October. The project was first unveiled in 2012 with Miguel Arteta directing and Rebel Wilson starring.

Larson broke through with “Short Term 12” and won the best actress Academy Award earlier this year for “Room.” Her upcoming projects include Marvel’s female-centric film “Captain Marvel,” Legendary’s “Kong: Skull Island,” Lionsgate’s coming-of-age drama “The Glass Castle,” and Ben Wheatley’s crime thriller “Free Fire.”

Larson is repped by WME and Authentic Talent and Literary Management.

Kasidokostas-Latsis and Dougas produced Lily Tomlin’s “Grandma” for Sony Classics and Natalie Portman’s “Jane Got a Gun.”

Hercules Film Fund co-financed Tom Cruise’s “Mena,” directed by Doug Liman; Maika Monroe’s “Tau,” which is currently filming; and Robert Pattinson’s “Good Time.” The fund was set up by Kasidokostas-Latsis to bring European investors to Hollywood to finance wide release films.

    Film Review: 'Shazam!'

In “Shazam!,” Zachary Levi brings off something so winning it’s irresistible. He plays a square-jawed, rippling-muscled man of might, with a cheesy Day-Glo lighting bolt affixed to his chest, who projects an insanely wholesome and old-fashioned idea of what a superhero can be. But he’s also playing a breathless teenage kid on the inside, and [...]

    Film Review: 'The Dirt'

A long time ago, the words sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll carried a hint of danger. The lifestyle did, too, but I’m talking about the phrase. It used to sound cool (back around the time the word “cool” sounded cool). But sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll has long since passed into the realm [...]

New Trend in Concert Halls: Original Music by Movie Composers — No Film Required

Movie and TV composers are in greater demand than ever for, surprisingly, new music for the concert hall. For decades, concert commissions for film composers were few and far between. The increasing popularity of John Williams’ film music, and his visibility as conductor of the Boston Pops in the 1980s and ’90s, led to his [...]
