Box Office: ‘Sausage Party’ Feasts on $3.3 Million on Thursday Night

Sausage Party” feasted on $3.3 million at the box office on Thursday night.

Although it’s a mixed bag at the box office this weekend, all three wide releases — “Sausage Party,” “Pete’s Dragon,” and “Florence Foster Jenkins” — have something in common: critical acclaim. The movies are currently “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sony’s raunchy animated comedy “Sausage Party” made $3.25 million from 2,632 locations at Thursday night early shows. It’s expected to finish third this weekend, behind “Pete’s Dragon” and “Suicide Squad,” with about $15 million.

Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, James Franco, Salma Hayek, Jonah Hill, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Danny McBride, Edward Norton, Paul Rudd, and Kristen Wiig voice crude food that learn the harsh truth that they will eventually become meals once leaving the comforts of their grocery store shelves.

Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan directed the R-rated pic, which Rogen penned with Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, and Evan Goldberg based on a story by Rogen, Goldberg, and Hill.

The film (84% on Rotten Tomatoes), which carries a bargain budget of $19 million, is launching at more than 3,000 locations after debuting at South by Southwest in March. Rogen’s last Sony movie, “The Night Before,” opened to $9.8 million before earning $43 million.

Paramount’s “Florence Foster Jenkins” earned $190,000 at Thursday preview screenings — the gross is comparable to Streep’s 2015 film “Ricki and the Flash,” which took in $200,000. Early forecasts peg the film’s debut — at about 1,158 locations — at $8 million.

Florence Foster Jenkins” is the biggest Oscar buzz generator of the trio of newcomers. The 1940s-set movie, based on a true story about a New York heiress who aspires to become an opera singer, despite having a terrible voice, could land Meryl Streep her 20th Oscar nomination and Hugh Grant his first nod. Stephen Frears directed the film.

Paramount acquired U.S. distribution rights to the $29 million film, which is targeting older adults, last fall. “Florence Foster Jenkins” (89% on Rotten Tomatoes) has already grossed $4.2 million in the U.K. and $2.7 million in Australia.

Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” skipped Thursday night previews. The remake of the 1977 original is the latest in this year’s flurry of reboots and reimaginings, including the Mouse House’s own “Jungle Book.”

The movie (88% on Rotten Tomatoes), which follows a boy and his beloved dragon, is set to soar to $25 million this weekend, coming in second behind supersized holdover “Suicide Squad.” “Pete’s Dragon” is the widest opener this weekend, bowing in 3,702 theaters, including 2,884 3D locations. It opens Friday in approximately 30% of the international market, including the U.K., Italy, and Russia.

The film directed by David Lowery, and starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, and Robert Redford, carries a moderate $65 million budget
