‘Baahubali’ Wins Best Film at India’s National Film Awards

Director S.S. Rajamouli’s “Baahubali: The Beginning” won best feature at the Indian government’s annual National Film Awards. The film grossed some $90 million in India and is releasing across 30 international territories.

Veteran Amitabh Bachchan was named best actor for his performance in “Piku,” while Kangana Ranaut won best actress for “Tanu Weds Manu Returns.” For Ranaut, the win is the second in a row after last year’s plaudit for “Queen.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali was named best director for “Bajirao Mastani.” Neeraj Ghaywan won best debut for “Masaan,” a film that won the Fipresci Prize and the Avenir Prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2015.

Samuthirakani won supporting actor for “Visaaranai” that had won the Amnesty International Italia Award at Venice 2015.  Tanvi Azmi won supporting actress for “Bajirao Mastani” and the film also won best cinematography for Sudeep Chatterjee.

Juhi Chaturvedi and Himanshu Sharma shared original screenplay for “Piku” and “Tanu Weds Manu Returns,” respectively, while Vishal Bhardwaj won adapted screenplay for “Talvar.”
