‘The Assassin’ Sweeps 10th Asian Film Awards

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s “The Assassin” was the major — and unsurprising — winner at the 10th edition of the Asian Film Awards.

It was named as best film with Hou also earning the best director prize, topping off a total of eight awards across performance and technical categories.

Shu Qi, the film’s troubled assassin, was named best actress, while Zhou Yun took best supporting actress. Mark Lee Ping-bing collected yet another award for the film’s sumptuous cinematography, both indoors and in stunning exteriors in China’s interior.

The minimalist and dialog-heavy martial arts drama which had its premiere in the Cannes film festival, also collected prizes for best design, music and sound.

That sweep left relatively thin pickings for other contenders. Star Korean performer Lee Byung-hun was named best actor for his role in hit drama “Inside Men,” while Japanese superstar Tadanobu Asano earned the best supporting actor prize for “Journey to the Shore.” Jia Zhang-ke collected a best script award for his “Mountains May Depart.”

Hong Kong drama ‘Port of Call’ earned two awards; one for actress Jessie Li as best newcomer, one for its editing.

Indian period piece “Bajirao Mastani” was the winner in the best visual effects category. Korea’s “The Throne” earned the best costume prize.

The awards, which are now the responsibility of an ‘Academy,’ were presented Thursday evening at the Venetian Hotel in Macau.
