Televisa and W Studios, the joint venture between former Telemundo Studios prexy Patricio Wills and U.S. Hispanic broadcaster Univision, have joined forces with Spain’s celebrated author-journo Arturo Perez Reverte (“Queen of the South”) to produce an ambitious series slated to shoot in Japan, Spain, Mexico and the U.S.
“El Ultimo Dragon” (“The Last Dragon”) is the first original TV series that Perez-Reverte writes although “Queen of the South” was made into a TV series in Spanish for Telemundo (“La Reina del Sur”) and in English for the USA Network, which just renewed it for a second season.
Story turns on a prominent Mexican businessman educated in Japan who turns into a white collar drug dealer. “Creating a TV character, such as a drug dealer, with different features from the traditional stereotypes, has been a thrilling challenge,” said Perez-Reverte. It is “something that has not been told until now: a portrait of a new generation of drug dealers, who can be found not in the violent world of shootings, border lines, or drug shipments, but at international financial offices, bank shareholder meetings and luxury hotels,” he added.
Antonio Alonso, Televisa’s Production VP, said: “This project joins the new co-production line that Televisa is working on with the objective of responding to the new consumer habits of viewers.” Show will air exclusively on Televisa’s new SVOD platform Blim, which has been busily commissioning a slew of filmmakers to produce series for it, among them Michel Franco of Lucia Films and Billy and Fernando Rovzar of Lemon Films.
At the recent 5th Los Cabos Film Festival, Ramiro Ruiz (“Gueros”), Pepe Nacif (“Gimme the Power”) Rodrigo Santos “La Dictadura Perfecta”) and Francisco Gonzalez Compean (“Amores Perros”) announced that they had teamed up to produce the 10-episode TV adaptation of Xavier Velasco’s iconic novel, “Diablo Guardian” for Blim.
“This story will revolutionize the actual image of classic drug dealers, giving place to a new generation of sophisticated gangsters, educated at the best universities, polyglots and with such technological abilities that they will surely make Wall Street shake,” said Wills, whose credits include “La Reina del Sur”, starring Kate del Castillo, “Black Widow” and “Zorro” among others.
