CANNES — Swedish arthouse distributor Folkets Bio has set up streaming platform Folketsbio.se, in partnership with digital distribution company Distrify Media.
The site will offer more than 200 titles, including last year’s Oscar winner for foreign-language film “Ida,” Martin Provost’s “Violette,” Juliano Ribeiro Salgado and Wim Wenders’ “The Salt of the Earth,” Zhangke Jia’s “A Touch of Sin” and Christian Petzold’s “Phoenix.”
Folkets Bio — literally “the People’s Cinema” — acquires, distributes and exhibits around 30 films a year. Many of its pics are festival hits, including Palme d’Or and Golden Bear winners. The company has its own theater chain with 30 screens in 20 locations, and it also distributes through other cinema chains and on all digital platforms.
Folkets Bio head of communications Anna Harding said: “We have so many great films in our catalog, and people frequently ask us where they can see them online legally. We’re really excited about partnering with Distrify to give our film-loving audiences access to amazing films on a beautiful, lovingly curated new site.”
Distrify Media chief marketing officer Kobi Shely said: “I’m delighted to join forces and launch this new VOD platform to enhance our visibility in Sweden, and attract audiences interested in discovering outstanding arthouse films.”
