Cannes Fest Inks Major Genre Industry Alliance With Fantasia’s Frontières (EXCLUSIVE)

Cannes Film Market, Frontieres roll out 2016 program, discuss 2017 genre movie Packaging-Financing Forum in Europe

CANNES – The world’s biggest movie industry mart, the Cannes Festival’s Cannes Film Market, and the Frontières Intl. Co-Production Market, the twice-a-year genre movie mart of Montreal’s Fantasia Festival, have established a wide-ranging genre-pic-focused industry partnership.

Genre alliance kicks off at next month’s Cannes Film Market with Frontiéres Goes to Cannes, a four genre pics-in-post showcase. But, in a major new industry initiative for the Cannes Festival which would take place outside Cannes dates at a venue in Europe, the Cannes market and Frontiéres are already in talks with other third-party collaborators to stage a Packaging and Financing Forum for genre movies next year.

Taking place in early 2017, in a venue in Europe other than Cannes, event would mark the second big standalone industry event backed by the Cannes Festival after the festival and Cannes market teamed with the INCAA Argentina Film Institute to launch the highly successful Ventana Sur, Latin America’s biggest movie market, which has helped galvanize international business for a new generation of Latin American producer and sales agents.

Other genre partnership events at next month’s Cannes Film Market include a panel and a Cannes Film Market Mixer: a scarefare industry networking event.

The 2017 Cannes Film Market-Frontières program will also expand to take in pitch sessions, one-to-one meetings and themed panels on the state of the genre industry and future of genre film.

Said Lindsay Peters, director of Frontières: “With genre cinema only continuing to grow in terms of technological innovation, insightful marketing strategies and international box office appeal, there has never been a better moment to expand the global networking opportunities for the genre film industry, and there is no better platform than the Marché du Film in Cannes.” Added Jérôme Paillard, executive director of the Cannes market: “Since a few years back, fantastic and horror films have proved to be a highly sustainable genre which reaches large audiences through all channels of distribution including new platforms.”

Paillard added: “We made our first steps three years ago in Ventana Sur with Blood Window and in Cannes with the Fantastic Mixer. Joining forces with Frontières is a very exciting new step which will support tremendously this industry.”

Presenting excerpts or teasers of four genre movies, Frontiéres Goes to Cannes targets an audience of sales agents, distributors and fest programmers. Entitled “The Future of Genre & Virtual Reality,” the Cannes 2016 panel will highlight and discuss Canadian Virtual Reality genre movies, slotting into the VR Days at the Cannes Film Market’s burgeoning NEXT conference strand. A fixture at the Cannes Festival, the Fantastic Fanatics Mixer will unspool at the Plage des Palmes, welcoming the world’s genre community and backed by Frontières, Frontières, Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, Ventana Sur’s Blood Window and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

The Cannes-Frontières alliance comes as mainstream audiences, governmental film authorities, and a new generation of filmmakers have embraced genre filmmaking, often to express social-issue concerns once the domain of art-house production.  Movies from international genre talent – Argentine-Spaniard Andy Muschietti with “Mama,” Fede Alvarez from Uruguay, with “Evil Dead” — have already topped U.S. charts. From Spain, Juan Antonio Bayona’s “A Monster Calls” weighs in as the biggest B.O prospect of 2016, Hollywood blockbusters included. Young production houses, just in Latin America: Argentina’s Magma Cine, Mexico’s Mantarraya, Colombia’s Rhayuela and Dynamo and Mexico’s Canana — have plowed into auteur genre production.

The Cannes Film Market-Frontières partnership adds large industry weight to a burgeoning network of genre industry events. Launched in 2013, Ventana Sur’s own Blood Market, sporting fantastic film works in progress and projects, has proved a major hub for notably often the very young genre talent generation that combines entertainment ambitions solved by a broad gamut of genre variations, with the ambition to make films of substance. Blood Window now backs a showcase of movies at the Cannes Festival. Launched 2012 at Canada’s Fantasia Fest, Frontières has staged three annual European editions at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, co-organized with Vision-in-Motion and BIFFF.
