Toronto: Under the Milky Way Acquires U.S. on Wide’s ‘The Student’

Russian Kirill Serebrennikov’s Cannes hit closes U.S., major territories

Under the Milky Way has acquired all U.S. rights to Russian Kirill Serebrennikov’s “The Student,” sold by Paris-based Wide Management, which world premiered at Cannes’ 2016’s Un Certain Regard. The deal includes a commitment to a theatrical release.

In further Wide sales deals, “The Student,” which turns on a high-school pupil whose religious fanaticism is unquestioningly seconded by Russian authorities, has also been licensed by Wide to Russia (Volga Films), Germany (Neue Visionen), Italy (I Wonder), U.K. (Matchbox) and South Korea (Contents Gate). ARP will handle French Distribution.

Wide has also sold “The Student” to Norway (Fidalgo), Turkey (Kurmaca), Benelux (Arti Films), Greece (Weird Wave), Poland (Arthouse), Hungary (Cinefilco), Romania (Transylvania), ex-Yugoslavia (2i Films), the Baltic States (Must Kasi),, Colombia (Cine Colombia).
