The American Film Institute has set the Emma Stone-Ryan Gosling musical “La La Land” as a Centerpiece Gala at AFI Fest on Nov. 15 at the TCL Chinese Theatre.

“La La Land,” directed by Damien Chazelle (“Whiplash”), premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31 and will be released Dec. 9 in the U.S. by Lionsgate. It has also opened the Denver and  Chicago Film Festivals, along with screening at Telluride and Toronto.

The story  follows a jazz musician and aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles. John Legend plays Gosling’s friend and bandmate in a supporting role. J. K. Simmons, Finn Whittrock, Tom Everett Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Meagen Fay also star.

“La La Land” opens wide on Dec. 9.

AFI Fest is opening Nov. 10 with the world premiere of Warren Beatty’s comedy-drama “Rules Don’t Apply.” The festival has also announced that it will host the world premiere of Robert De Niro’s “The Comedian” on the following night.

The festival has also set a Nov. 13 tribute screening of Isabelle Huppert’s “Elle” and a Nov. 16 gala for Annette Bening’s “20th Century Women.”
