Cannes Lunchtime: Brian O’Shea

From his office balcony above the Croisette, The Exchange’s CEO Brian O’Shea has a stellar view of the red carpet on the Palais steps. The central location plays into the veteran international sales exec’s strategy, from evening receptions overlooking arrivals to running into key distribs across the way. Of his firm’s slate, he’s most jazzed about helmer Clay Tweel’s “Gleason,” an emotionally powerful documentary that intimately chronicles former pro football star Steve Gleason’s battle with ALS. During the festival, he prefers to dine as close-in to the market’s action as possible.

Bright start to the day
We start the day with coffee, croissants and pre-meetings with the group. Then it’s a daylong meeting schedule. I don’t like to go outside of town for meals or events; part of our strategy is the location we have, where there’s a constant flow of opportunity and information you want to take advantage of.

La Libera

Lunch agenda
The first dinner I went to 20 years ago was at small Italian place called La Libera. The owners are now friends and save a table for me. It’s Cannes prices, but not crazy expensive; it’s a very pleasant place to go and more about the personality of the restaurant. On the beach: I like the Majestic Beach. It’s expensive but convenient for when you want to be on the water.

La Pizza Cresci

Sure bet spot for dinner
La Mere Besson: their chicken and pommes frites are Cannes comfort food. It’s a very strict operation, run by one woman. You need to be incredibly punctual or she will give the table away. I’ve gone there so often I get there on time. La Pizza Cresci is our tradition on the first night. On the last day, I go to a beach outside of Cannes in Saint Jean-Cap-Ferrat. A filmmaker friend has an apartment there. There’s only one place to go: Plage de Passable (pictured top). It’s right on the beach and serves fresh seafood, homemade pizza. It’s delicious and the best after the market.
