Box Office: ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Powers to $130 Million Ahead of U.S. Debut

X-Men: Apocalypse” has powered to $130 million at the international marketplace ahead of its U.S. opening this weekend.

The tentpole, the ninth “X-Men” movie from Fox, opened impressively last weekend with $101 million from 20,596 screens in 77 markets. It launched first in all territories. “Apocalypse” earned the biggest Fox opening weekend ever in seven territories: India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and the Dominican Republic.

South Korea saw a strong debut day on Thursday with $1.7 million from 1,216 screens and a 57% market share. “Apocalypse’s” debut marks fourth-highest opening day ever for Fox, behind its Korean drama “The Wailing,” “The Martian” and “Deadpool.”

In addition to Korea and the U.S., Fox is also opening “Apocalypse” in Bangladesh, the Maldives, Mongolia and Myanmar this weekend. It’s expected to come in No. 1 at the U.S. box office with at least $80 million over the Memorial Day weekend.

In the movie, the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance as Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven/Mystique and Professor X (James McAvoy) lead a team of young X-Men to stop Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) and the Four Horsemen. It’s directed by Bryan Singer from a script by Simon Kinberg.

The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn and Lucas Till. Lawrence recently confirmed that “Apocalypse” will be her last film in the franchise.
