‘Star Wars’ Soaring Past ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ at International Box Office

Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will soon reach yet another milestone as it’s poised to pass “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for the sixth spot at the international box office.

Disney’s space saga took in $14.2 million on Monday in foreign markets to lift its international total to $935.4 million — or $10.6 million behind “Age of Ultron.” The seventh Star Wars movie should also pass “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” for the fifth spot at $960.5 million and “Jurassic World” for the fourth spot at $1.02 billion by the end of the week.

“The Force Awakens” debuted in China on Saturday with a record $53 million and has added $6.6 million since then. The U.K. is the top foreign market with $161.5 million, followed by Germany with $94.8 million.

“The Force Awakens” has been marketed aggressively in China, where the “Star Wars” saga has a short history because the first six films have not been released commercially — although they have played on television and in legal and illegal home entertainment formats. Robots BB-8 and R2-D2, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, director J.J. Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy were all on hand at a Dec. 27 premiere in Shanghai.

The blockbuster took in $3.1 million on Monday in the U.S. to lift its 25-day total to $819.5 million, nearly $70 million beyond the former  record holder, “Avatar.” “The Force Awakens” has grossed $1.75 billion worldwide and trails only “Avatar” at $2.78 billion and “Titanic” at $2.19 billion.
