Korea Box Office: Kwak Jae-yong’s ‘Time Renegades’ Debuts on Top

“My Sassy Girl” director Kwak Jae-yong’s first Korean-language film in 8 years, local thriller “Time Renegades” debuted on top of the Korean box office. The CJ Entertainment release scored $3.94 million from 547,000 admissions between Wednesday and Sunday.

Since 2008’s “My Mighty Princess,” Kwak has made films in China and Japan. “Renegades” is a time-shifting romantic thriller about a high school teacher in 1983 and a detective in 2015 who join forces to change the fate of a woman they both love.

Previous week winner, “Insane” slipped to second, earning $1.43 million between Friday and Sunday. The local thriller has made $5.87 million after two weekends. Long running “Zootopia” took fourth, with $1.18 million for a total of $29.0 million after nine weeks.

UPI’s action adventure “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” opened in third, making $2.13 million from 304,000 admissions between Wednesday and Sunday. Opening on the same day, Lotte Entertainment’s period drama “Love, Lies” landed in fifth.

Directed by Park Heung-sick (“Memories of the Sword”), the picture earned $1.67 million over five days.

Another Lotte title “10 Cloverfield Lane” and Warner Bros.’ “Batman v Superman” took sixth and seventh, representing week-on-week drops of 82% and 78%, respectively. “Cloverfield” has $2.38 million after two weekends. “Batman” has $16.3 million after four weeks.

Re-released after 17 years, Italian-language war drama “Life is Beautiful” opened in ninth earning $272,000 between Wednesday and Sunday.
