Korea Box Office: ‘Deadpool’ Is Biggest Non-Korean R-Rated Release

Opening on 1,035 screens, “Deadpool” debuted on top of the Korea box office. The Fox release earned $11.7 million between Feb. 13 and 21.

Although the superhero movie officially opened on Wednesday (Feb. 17), it started selling tickets from an unprecedented broad pre-opening on 150 screens during the previous weekend.  That made “Deadpool” the biggest non-Korean R-rated release, beating “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”

Local crime comedy “A Violent Prosecutor” slipped to second in its third week. The Showbox release earned $2.93 million for a total of $58.5 million from 9.04 million admissions.

“Zootopia” debuted in third, making $2.6 million from 419,500 admissions between Wednesday and Sunday.

CJ Entertainment’s romantic comedy “Like for Likes,” about finding love online, landed in fourth, earning $3.04 million from 477,000 admissions.

Lee Joon-ik’s low-budget black and white period movie, “Dongju; The Portrait of a Poet,” opened in fifth. It earned $1.44 million between Wednesday and Sunday. The picture focuses on the life and work of Yun Dong Ju, Korea’s top poet from the Japanese colonial era.

“Kung Fu Panda 3” dropped to sixth place, scoring $600,000 between Friday and Sunday for a total of $24.9 million after four weeks.

UPI’s “The Danish Girl” debuted in seventh, with a score of $351,000 over five days – and was director Tom Hooper’s lowest opening score in Korea.

Another Oscar nominee, “Carol,” slipped to eighth. It earned $126,000 between Friday and Sunday, extending its total to $1.88 million.
