Korea Box Office: ‘Batman v Superman’ Takes Two Thirds of Weekend Total

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” debuted on top of the Korean box office, accounting for 68% of the weekend box office.

Opening on 1,600 screens nationwide, the film earned $10.1 million from 1.39 million admissions between Thursday and Sunday. That is higher than the opening score of previous DC movie “Man of Steel,” which made $8.24 million from 1.21 million admissions over four days in 2013, but weaker than “The Dark Knight Rises,” which earned $15.4 million from 2.43 million admissions in 2012.

Previous weekend winner, “Zootopia” slipped to second place. The Walt Disney animation earned $1.8 million between Friday and Sunday, for a total of $21.2 million from 3.18 million admissions after six weekends.

Korean low-budget drama, “One Way Trip” opened in third, earning $766,000 between Thursday and Sunday. The CJ release about four friends, whose fate dramatically changes in one night, premiered at last year’s Busan festival.
Fourth-placed, local drama “Spirits’ Homecoming” made $303,000 between Friday and Sunday, for a total of $22.9 million after five weekends.

With a rare week-on-week rise of 30%, Biblical drama “Risen” jumped to fifth in the Easter weekend. The Sony release made $232,000 between Friday and Sunday, for a total of $564,000 after two weekends.

“London Has Fallen” earned $258,000 between Friday and Sunday, extending its total to $4.88 million after three weekends.

The Coen brothers’ “Hail Caesar!” opened in eighth and earned $146,000 between Thursday and Sunday.

Lee Joon-ik’s historical drama, “Dongju; The Portrait of A Poet” took ninth. It has earned $7.39 million since its Feb. 17 release, and is set for an April 1 release in North America.
