The Revenant” grabbed attention with a great opening in China, but “Zootopia” won the weekend at the Chinese box office.

The popularity of Leonardo DiCaprio in the Middle Kingdom and his recent Oscar endorsement ensured a strong Friday launch for “The Revenant.” It earned $9.80 million and first place according to local box office service Ent Group.

Saturday and Sunday charts were dominated by the more family friendly “Zootopia” which clocked up $16.6 million on Saturday and a further $13.1 million on Sunday, ahead of “The Revenant” which dropped to $7.26 million on Saturday and $9.22 million on Sunday.

Their performances at the top of the Chinese box office gave “Zootopia” a weekend haul of $37.0 million (ComScore reported $38.6 million) and a 17 day cumulative of $173 million, and gave “The Revenant” a three day score of $31.7 million.

Including previews, Ent Group reports a $32 million cumulative. Fox reported $33 million.
Chinese-made romantic comedy “Rise of a Tomboy” came third on each day of the weekend and earned a modest $5.02 million in its opening weekend.
