China Box Office: ‘Zootopia’ Ahead of ‘Revenant’

The Revenant” grabbed attention with a great opening in China, but “Zootopia” won the weekend at the Chinese box office.

The popularity of Leonardo DiCaprio in the Middle Kingdom and his recent Oscar endorsement ensured a strong Friday launch for “The Revenant.” It earned $9.80 million and first place according to local box office service Ent Group.

Saturday and Sunday charts were dominated by the more family friendly “Zootopia” which clocked up $16.6 million on Saturday and a further $13.1 million on Sunday, ahead of “The Revenant” which dropped to $7.26 million on Saturday and $9.22 million on Sunday.

Their performances at the top of the Chinese box office gave “Zootopia” a weekend haul of $37.0 million (ComScore reported $38.6 million) and a 17 day cumulative of $173 million, and gave “The Revenant” a three day score of $31.7 million.

Including previews, Ent Group reports a $32 million cumulative. Fox reported $33 million.
Chinese-made romantic comedy “Rise of a Tomboy” came third on each day of the weekend and earned a modest $5.02 million in its opening weekend.

“Gods of Egypt” placed fourth throughout the weekend and scored $3.49 million, for a cumulative of $32.8 million after 10 days.

“Ip Man 3” earned 2.35 million in fifth place for a cumulative of $122 million after 17 days, though it is not clear that the total figure has yet been adjusted down to take account of the mis-reporting uncovered by the SAPPRFT regulator.

Comedy adventure, “PAPA” failed to break the $1 million barrier on its opening weekend. “The Mermaid” trod water for an $800,000 weekend and a cumulative of $523 million after 42 days. “Kung Fu Panda 3” earned $470,000 and stands on a cumulative of $154 million after 52 days.

“Eddie The Eagle,” the story of a goofy British ski jumper, went downhill from the beginning of its run. It recorded just $410,000, according to Ent Group, a desperately poor score for a revenue sharing import.

Horror-thriller “Red Cheongsam” scared up only $280,000 in its opening three days.
