Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” has topped the $700 million mark at the global box office in less than two weeks.
The third Captain America movie opened in the U.S. to the fifth-highest-grossing weekend of all time with $179.1 million, then added $13.3 million on Monday for a four-day total of $192.5 million.
“Civil War,” which began its international run on April 27, added $18.8 million on Monday for a total of $512.8 million. China is leading the way with $104.6 million after four days, followed by South Korea with $54.3 million, the U.K. with $40.6 million, Mexico with $34.8 million and Brazil with $26.1 million.
At $705.3 million worldwide, “Civil War” is already the 83rd highest-grossing movie of all time. Thanks to strong reviews plus solid word-of-mouth, the tentpole has an excellent chance of becoming the 25th film to take in $1 billion worldwide by the end of its run.
Disney’s “Zootopia” is the top worldwide grosser among 2016 releases with $958 million, followed by Warner Bros.’ “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” at $868 million, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” at $779 million and Fox’s “Deadpool” at $762 million.
The marketing for “Civil War” clearly resonated with moviegoers, as it promised an epic fight between Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, plus the introduction of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. It racked up As in all demographics on CinemaScore.
“Captain America: Civil War” should top by Wednesday the total cume of 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” — $714.4 million.
