Box Office: ‘Miracles From Heaven’ Opens to Solid $1.9 Million

Sony’s “Miracles From Heaven” opened to a solid $1.9 million Wednesday, and the faith-based drama appears to be resonating with audiences.

The film about a little girl’s medical miracle received an A+ CinemaScore. It is on pace to generate $10 million over its first five days of release, despite heavy competition from Disney’s “Zootopia” and the debut of “The Divergent Series: Allegiant.” “Zootopia,” one of the biggest hits of the year, easily topped the Wednesday box office, pulling in $4.6 million. Its domestic total stands at $159.2 million, and it should do $30 million worth of business this weekend.

“Allegiant,” the third installment in the futuristic saga, is looking to debut to roughly between $34 million and $40 million, a drop from the $54.6 million that the first “Divergent” pulled in when the series kicked off in 2014 and the $52.3 million launch of its 2015 follow-up, “Insurgent.” A final chapter, “Ascendant,” is due out in the summer of 2017.

Miracles from Heaven” stars Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah. It comes from Sony’s Affirm label, which has had success with the likes of “War Room” and “Heaven Is for Real.” The hope is that “Miracles” can establish a toehold over the weekend and play well through the Easter holiday. Faith-based films traditionally are slow burns, but capturing the audience can be difficult.
