‘Shoah’ Director Claude Lanzmann to Attend Oscars for First Time Ever

Documentary filmmaker is the subject of nominee 'Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah'

Filmmaker Adam Benzine, director of the Oscar-nominated short documentary “Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah,” has announced that for the first time ever, the subject of his film — fellow documentary filmmaker Claude Lanzmann — will attend the Academy Awards on Feb. 28.

Like Benzine, Lanzmann was a journalist before making his way behind the camera. “Spectres” details his experience making the 1985 tome “Shoah,” a nine-and-a-half-hour documentary on the Holocaust.

Lanzmann himself has never been nominated for an Oscar. He did not join the Academy until 2013 and is currently an active voting member.

Other films nominated in the documentary short category this year tackle honor killings (“A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”), a Liberian Ebola outbreak (“Body Team 12”), an artist’s perseverance through Agent Orange-inflicted disability (“Chau, Beyond the Lines”) and capital punishment imposed on a veteran suffering from PTSD (“Last Day of Freedom”).
