Metropolitan Filmexport has pounced on multiple rights to Korean thriller “The Wailing” (aka “Gokseong”.) Directed by Na Hong Jin, the film has its international premiere in official selection at Cannes out of competition.
Metropolitan acquired rights for France, Benelux and French-speaking parts of Switzerland in a deal negotiated between Cyril Burkel and Suh Youngjoo.
Infotainment Media acquired the film for mainland China release. It was previously sold to Well Go USA for North America. Well Go will release it on May 27.
The film, about father who tenaciously endeavors to save his daughter from danger, is presented and produced by Fox International Productions and co-produced by SideMirror. It opened in Korea yesterday (May 11.)
“(The film takes) the premise that obscurity is followed by suspicion and that no one can know the truth, and focuses on the themes of paternal love and rumors,” said Finecut.
It is the third feature by Na, who previously saw his debut “The Chaser” in Cannes in 2008 and “The Yellow Sea” in Un Certain Regard in 2010.
