Mamoru Hosoda, Shunji Iwai Set for Spotlight at Tokyo Festival

Iconic anime film maker Mamoru Hosoda and Shunji Iwai will be the focus of special sections at this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival.

The spotlight on Hosoda is part of the festival’s recently introduced animation focus. Hosoda became well-known through “Summer Wars” (2009) and “Wolf Children” (2012) which were local and international hits. Last year his “The Boy and the Beast,” became the highest-grossing Japanese film of the year at the Japanese box office. France’s Gaumont is handling international sales on the picture.

Iwai has dabbled with animation, but recently returned to live-action film making. His best-known films include “Love Letter” (1995,) “All About Lily Chou-Chou” (2001) and “Hana and Alice” (2004). His most recently completed film is “A Bride for Rip Van Winkle.”
