Korea Box Office: ‘Himalayas’ Remains On Top, Ahead of Extended ‘Inside Men’

“The Himalayas” remained on top of the Korean box office in its third weekend. During the three-day New Year’s holiday weekend, the picture earned $8.55 million from 1.24 million admissions. The CJ Entertainment release has made $42.1 million from 6.37 million admissions after three weekends on release, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS service.

Inside Men: The Original,” a three-hour director’s cut of the top R-rated feature of 2015, debuted in second. The extended version made $5.85 million from 831,000 admissions between Thursday and Sunday. “Inside Men” now stands on a total of $47.0 million from 7.07 million admissions after seven weeks.

Despite opening on Saturday and having only a two day run, “Sherlock” debuted in third. The British crime drama made $4.47 million from 664,000 admissions. It is the biggest Korean opening for Benedict Cumberbatch and has strong ticket pre-sales going forward.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” slipped to fourth, earning $2.46 million between Friday and Sunday for a total of $23.0 million after three weekend on release.

Lotte Entertainment’s final release of 2015, “The Magician” debuted in sixth place. The period fantasy film made $3.21 million between Wednesday and Sunday. Starring fan girls’ favorite Yoo Seung-ho (“Blind”), “Magician” is a story about a princess in the Joseon Dynasty and the era’s top magician falling in love despite their different social standings.

Opening on Dec. 30, fantasy action adventure feature “The Last Witch Hunter” earned $391,900 between Wednesday and Sunday.
