TOKYO – Makoto Shinkai’s animation “Your Name” topped the chart for the fifth successive weekend at the Japanese box office, while advancing past the JPY10 billion ($99.5 million) mark. For the weekend of Sept. 24-25, the Toho-distributed smash earned $8.6 million on 637,000 admissions.
The film is currently on track to beat the $252 million recorded by 2014’s number one film, “Frozen.” That reached JPY10 billion on its 37th day of release; “Your Name’ needed only 28.
The highest ranking new entry, at number two, was Clint Eastwood’s “Sully.” In its opening frame the film made $2.2 million. With Warner distributing, the film looks likely to finish north of $15 million.
Ranking ninth was Toho’s “Shin Godzilla,” which drove its total admissions past the 5 million mark on earnings of $73 million. Only six other films in the 29-installment local Godzilla series have reached this milestone and those were released in the 1950s and 1960s.
