Indian exhibition chain Inox Leisure has signed a deal to install five Imax theaters in four of the country’s biggest cities. Inox will add the screens to existing multiplexes in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Kolkata.

It is the first Imax installation for the company. The deal will lift the number of Imax screens in India from 15 to 20, including nine that are currently open and 11 under contract.

Inox, which was founded in 2002, currently operates 107 multiplexes, with 420 screens across 57 cities and 19 states. Unusually, it is 100% 3D enabled, and claims high frame rate, 2k and 4k digital projection systems, according to COE Alok Tandon.

“India is potentially a huge opportunity for us,” said Imax CEO, Richard L. Gelfond. “Now is the time to grow in this strategically important market and this deal serves as an important first step. We believe that Inox adding Imax theatres to its most successful complexes – which are situated in top-tier cities – will help us expand our network in India at a more rapid pace.”
