Edwin, Jang Kun-Jae Head Asian Project Market Winners

Indonesia’s Edwin and Korean indie director Jang Kun-jae were among the recipients of awards from the Busan Film Festival’s Asian Project Market.

Winners were announced and awarded at the market’s closing reception at Westin Chosun on Thursday night.

The project market, held Oct. 9-11 alongside the right sales market, featured 27 titles from auteurs from 16 Asian countries.

The Busan Award, sponsored by the Busan city and worth $15,000, reduced from last year’s $20,000, was given to Edwin’s “Love and Vengeance.” Currently at script stage, the project sees the story of a man who has erection problem.

A new award, Bright East Films Award ($15,000) went to Japan’s “The Chrysanthemum and the Guillotine.” Currently shooting, it is directed by Zeze Takahisa, one of Japan’s top exponents of ‘pink movies.’

Awarded by two of Korea’s biggest entertainment conglomerates, CJ Entertainment Award ($10,000) and Lotte Entertainment Award ($9,000) went to Cambodia-France co-production “White Building” by Neang Kavich and Korean director Seo Eun-young’s “Undefined,” respectively. “Building” also won the EUR 6,000 ARTE International Prize sponsored by ARTE France. The awards give CJ and Lotte first look options in terms of production, investment, distribution and international sales of the projects.

The MONEFF Award went to “The Cold-Blooded Penguin” by Korean indie director Jang. The award offers $30,000 worth of post-production services and facilities, including editing and VFX.

At the end of the E-IP market’s second edition, two awards worth $9,000 were presented. Sponsored by Korean distributor Next Entertainment World, the New Creator Award for Book to Film pitching, went to Chung Myung-seob’s novel “The Lawyer who sues Chosun Dynasty.” From E-IP pitching, All That Story’s sci-fi web novel “Sprinter: Underworld” won the award.
