YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Fashion world mover and shaker Tamara Mellon, the former chief creative officer of the bespoke Jimmy Choo shoe brand and widely reported in the spring of 2015 to be affianced to modern art collecting entertainment industry power player Michael Ovitz, has re-listed her super-deluxe duplex penthouse atop the swanky Carhart Mansion on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with a $27 million price tag. The fortunately born footwear queen and fashion designer — her father was a co-founder if the Vidal Sassoon salon chain and her mother modeled for Chanel — paid Seagram heir Edgar Bronfman Jr., $20 million for the plummy penthouse in September 2008, several years after her divorce from American banking scion Matthew Mellon. The penthouse has been on and off the open market since July 2014 when it first turned up for sale at $34 million.

Perhaps the best way to make quick sense of the suburban mansion-sized penthouse, which Mellon had worked over at what was unquestionably jaw-dropping expense by flamboyant British decorator Martyn Lawrence Bullard, is with a numerical rundown of some of its more remarkable attributes: 7,140-square-feet of interior space that includes a 41-foot-long living room and 700-square-foot library/media lounge on the upper level; four full and two half bathrooms plus a one-bed/one-bath staff suite tucked behind the sleek all-white kitchen; four fireplaces; more than a dozen closets including an immense dressing room in the master suite with — natch — copious floor-to-ceiling shoe racks; three roomy terraces that together span 3,000-or-so square feet; and maintenance fees and taxes that, according to listing details, come to a heart-stopping $421,044 per year.

There are only three other gigantic and equally opulent apartments in the boutique building that was designed in 1913 in the soignée style of a classic Parisian hôtel particulier by celebrated high society architect Horace Trumbauer for Mrs. Armory S. Carhart who actually died before the mansion was completed. The property was acquired in 1935 by the Lycee Francais de New York and used as a school until it was sold in 2000 after which it was converted to a quartet of condominiums. The largest unit is owned by American Express CEO and Chairman Kenneth Chennault who bought his 16,000-plus-square-foot spread in 2006 for not quite $22 million and the smallest residence, at a smidgen over 7,000-square-feet, has been owned since the fall of 2005 by South Korean K-Pop superstar Kim Tae-Woo who picked it up for $12.5 million. The remaining residence is owned by corrugated cardboard tycoon Dennis Mehiel who bought his sumptuously outfitted 10,350-square-foot duplex in October 2005 for $15,782,000 million and first put up for sale in October 2014 at $34.9 million and now has listed at the much reduced price of $29.8 million.

Mellon, who currently heads up an eponymous fashion label that filed for bankruptcy in late 2015 and was bailed out by a private equity investment in early 2016, has long maintained a residence in her native London but told Hello magazine in March 2015 that she and Mister Ovitz planned to settle together in New York City where they co-purchased a residence they planned to raze and rebuild as a joint project.
