Richard Donner Says Aloha to Maui Retreat

The eagle-eyed property gossips at Realtor.com have sussed out a Polynesian-inspired beachfront compound on the Hawaiian island of Maui owned, per property records, by acclaimed director-producer Richard Donner and put up for sale with a blockbuster price tag of $22 million. Now in his 80s, Donner pioneered the terrifically lucrative superhero-driven action film genre when he directed the late Christopher Reeve in the 1978 film “Superman” and later went on to direct and produce all four of the “Lethal Weapon” movies, as well to executive produce a couple of the money-minting “X-Men” mega-hits.

Set behind gates, and completely obscured by a thicket of palms, the cinematically sited one-acre spread presides over more than 160 feet of postcard-perfect frontage on Keawakapu Beach in the Wailea-Makena community. Custom designed by esteemed architect Thomas A. Kligerman for Donner and his accomplished “Pretty in Pink” and “X-Men” franchise producer wife, Lauren Shuler Donner, the tropical compound includes a 4,500-square-foot main residence with two bedrooms and one full and three half bathrooms, plus a state-of-the-art screening room and a cavernous great room with voluminously vaulted exposed wood ceiling. Wide banks of glass sliders disappear into the walls, and open to a deep, house-wide lanai that overlooks a broad expanse of palm-tree-dotted lawn that stretches down to the beach. A guesthouse adds two more bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, plus a gym and office.

A quick spin through property records indicates the Donners also own a small house in Beverly Hills, as well as a 1950s contemporary on almost 1.2 hillside acres above the Sunset Strip, along with a neighboring 1.25-acre compound anchored by an A-lister-worthy residence of nearly 9,000 square feet.
