David Geffen Lists Manhattan Co-Op for $27.5 Million

SELLER: David Geffen
LOCATION: New York City, NY
PRICE: $27,500,000
SIZE: (approx.) 5,000 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Now that he’s done with the years long, no doubt frighteningly costly, and excessively-irksome-to-neighbors do over of his titanic, 12,000-square-foot duplex penthouse atop the Parc V building on New York City’s Fifth Avenue that he bought from socialite songwriter Denise Rich in 2012 for a staggering $54 million, 70-something-year-old media baron David Geffen has put a smaller, art-filled apartment in the same building up for sale, as was first reported by the property gossips at The Wall Street Journal, with an asking price of $27.5 million. Mister Geffen, whose net worth is estimated by the bean counters at Forbes to exceed six billion dollars, purchased the Charles Gwathmey-designed two-bedroom and 2.5 bathroom apartment in February 2010 for $14.17 million and, as he’s had done with most if not all of his other homes, had the approximately 5,000-square-foot aerie worked over by soignée decorator Rose Tarlow in a meticulously tailored yet fairly casual and eminently comfortable manner.

At nearly 46-feet long and almost 25-feet wide the central living space is more than commodious enough to accommodate multiple seating areas plus a generous dining space with unobstructed views up, down and clear across Central Park. The kitchen is completely closed off from the main living space and offers a deft mix between blond wood and stainless steel cabinetry along with top-quality appliances we’re sure Mister Geffen’s private chef appreciates. A snazzy cantilevered dining table sits beneath a room-wide window with quintessentially New York City views of the Plaza Hotel and the south end of Central Park. The guest bedroom has head on park views and access to a hall bathroom that is considerably larger than the compartmentalized bathroom in the master bedroom that also includes a full wall of built-ins in the bedroom that incorporates a gigantic television, a cantilevered built-in desk with open views over the park, and a custom-fitted walk-in closet worthy of a boutique that is so mind-freezingly expensive they don’t even put price tags on items because if you have to ask how much something costs you probably can’t afford it. A potential third bedroom, discretely tucked behind the kitchen, has been converted to a sophisticated and sound-proofed screening room with state-of-the-art projection equipment, a cozy quartet of plush chaises and a full wall of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves where an Oscar statuette stands next to a remarkably poignant and soul baring portrait of Marilyn Monroe snapped by the late and great photographer Richard Avedon.

Mister Geffen, a veteran staple of property gossip columns on both coasts, continues to own the 10-acre and fully landscaped former Jack Warner estate in Beverly Hills along with an ocean-front compound on Malibu’s Carbon Beach that we’ve repeatedly heard through the Platinum Triangle real estate gossip grapevine — including again this morning — can be shown with an knee-buckling $100 million price tag if you know the right people to call. On the east coast, in the Hamptons, the trophy home collecting billionaire recently sold a 5.5-acre compound on East Hampton’s gorgeous and prestigious Georgica Pond for $67.3 million — he’d bought the multi-residence property just two years earlier for about $50 million — and shelled out $70 million for a 2.04-acre ocean front spread less than a mile away.
