Alan Ball Decamps Craftsman Compound (EXCLUSIVE)

This property gossip has to assume Quentin Tarantino is just a-quiver with glee that his next door neighbors, screenwriter Alan Ball and actor Peter Macdissi, have put their compound in a particularly star-studded pocket of the Hollywood Hills up for sale, at $8.5 million. At his wits end in 2011 with the “obnoxious pterodactyl-like screams” that emanated from the aviary where Ball and Macdissi maintained a menagerie of cacophonous macaws, Tarantino filed a rancorous disruption of the peace lawsuit that was, in the end, settled out of court.

Property records suggest Ball and Macdissi have owned the secluded 1.15-acre property since at least 2003, and current listing details show the multi-structure spread, at the end of a long, gated and tree-shaded drive, provides a total of six bedrooms and six bathrooms in about 6,000 square feet. The substantially upgraded Craftsman-style main house, built in the 1950s, has adjoining living and dining rooms, a petite paneled library with fireplace, well-outfitted kitchen, and — natch — a state-of-the-art screening room. Two guest bedrooms in the main house both have clever built-in beds, and the master suite offers a fireplace and balcony with unobstructed canyon, mountain and city lights views. A sizable secondary structure contains a one-bedroom and one-bathroom apartment as well as a double-height gym and steam shower, and a third structure, with concrete floors and kitchen, is suitable as an additional guesthouse. A swimming pool and spa are set into a roomy terrace well below the house and, tucked into the trees behind the guesthouse, is the infamous aviary that listing descriptions suggest — and Mister Tarantino probably prefers — could be repurposed as a greenhouse.

Ball, currently writing, directing and exec producing the period musical drama “Virtuoso,” and Macdissi, who pops up in many of his partner’s projects, have already packed up their feathered pets and decamped to another, even more expansive multi-residence compound in the foothills just above Hollywood purchased from Sheryl Crow in the fall of 2014 for a sliver under $11.1 million.

Zach Goldsmith with Hilton & Hyland is listing the property.
