‘The Jungle Book’ Notches Second Week Atop Disc Charts

Disney live-action remake remains at No. 1

Walt Disney Studios’ “The Jungle Book,” a live-action/CGI remake of Disney’s 1967 animated classic with a worldwide gross of nearly $965 million, topped the national home video sales charts for the second consecutive week.

But the film received a strong challenge by a new release, Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me 2,” which bowed at No. 2 on the two NPD VideoScan sales charts for the week ended Sept. 11, one reflecting total disc sales and the other exclusively Blu-ray Disc.

The action adventure sequel, with U.S. theatrical earnings of more than $65 million (to more than $117 million for the 2013 original), sold 93% as many copies its first week in stores as “The Jungle Book” did in its second week of availability, NPD VideoScan Numbers show.

The film generated 51% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray disc, NPD VideoScan data shows, compared to 54% for “The Jungle Book.”

Another new release, Sony Pictures’ “Money Monster,” with George Clooney and Julia Roberts and a $41 million theatrical pedigree, debuted at No. 4 on both charts. Its first week in stores, the crime drama generated 41% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc.

The No. 3 spot on the overall disc sales chart went to Warner’s “Me Before You,” a romantic drama starring “Games of Thrones” heroine Emilia Clarke that debuted the prior week at No. 2.

On the Blu-ray Disc chart the film finished at No. 9, down from No. 4 the previous week. Blu-ray Disc sales in week two accounted for just 27% of total unit sales, down from 30% the prior week.

Warner’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” out since mid-July, finished the week at No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart and No. 5 on the overall disc sales chart.

Universal Pictures’ “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” rounded out the top five on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, down from No. 2 the prior week.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Now You See Me 2” debuted at No. 1 and “The Money Monster” bowed at No. 2.

Their arrival in rental stores pushed “The Jungle Book” down to No. 3, from No. 2 the previous week, and Universal Pictures’ “The Boss,” last week’s top rental, to No. 4.

Rounding out the top five was “The Angry Birds Movie,” down from No. 4 the previous week.
