Fox Sports And NextVR Stream Boxing Matches In Virtual Reality

Now you can be ringside without leaving your home: Virtual reality (VR) startup NextVR has teamed up with Fox Sports to present Saturday’s Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) matches as a VR live stream.

The stream includes Danny “Swift” Garcia facing off against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero as well as Sammy Vasquez Jr. against Aron Martinez and  Amir Mansour against Dominic Breazeale. Viewers can tune in via the NextVR app on Samsung’s GearVR headset at 5 p.m. PT, coinciding with the live broadcast on Fox Sports.

This isn’t the first time boxing fans could use VR to get closer to their favorite fighters. DirecTV introduced a Cardboard-based VR app for Big Knockout Boxing (BKB) last fall. However, that app didn’t include any live streaming capabilities, and instead just featured clips from past matches.

Laguna Beach, California-based NextVR has done a number of live streams from other sporting events in the past, including streams from an NBA game and a NASCAR race. The company also streamed a Democratic presidential debate in virtual reality last summer, which led to Stephen Colbert mocking the trend on the “Late Show“.

NextVR raised $30.5 million from Comcast, Time Warner and others in November.
