Raunchy Comedy ‘Laid in America’ With YouTube Stars KSI, Caspar Lee Gets Release Dates

“Laid in America,” a ribald buddy comedy toplined by digital stars KSI and Caspar Lee, will be released Sept. 26 in the U.K. and the following day in the U.S. on digital platforms.

The feature-length movie will have back-to-back London and Hollywood premieres. In the U.K., it will release simultaneously on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and digital download on Sept. 26; day of the premieres; in the States, it will hit digital services Sept. 27, while DVD and Blu-ray versions will be released Oct. 4. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group is handling distribution for the film in the U.S., U.K., Ireland and Latin America, while the film’s producers are handling distribution for the rest of the world.

“Laid in America,” aiming to appeal to the kind of audiences that flocked to teen comedies like “American Pie” and “Superbad,” is the latest vehicle featuring popular social “influencers” — a strategy designed to rally their fanbases to pay for the content. KSI, a gamer-comedian-actor-rapper whose name is Olajide Olatunji, has more than 13.8 million YouTube subscribers, while vlogger-actor Caspar Lee has more than 6.5 million.

In the film, KSI and Lee play two British high-school exchange students desperate to lose their virginity with the girls of their dreams during their last night in America. Their friendship is tested as they blunder through the night to fulfill their fantasies before their flights back to the U.K.

Other YouTube and Vine creators who appear in the movie — with an aggregate of more than 30 million followers — include Josh Leyva, Madison Iseman, Syd Wilder, Alexis G Zall, Bart Baker, Timothy Delaghetto, Deji Olatunji, Jorge Munoz, Tay Zonday, Alex Wassabi, Taryn Southern, Jason Horton, Gabbie Hanna, Alexa Losey and Michelle Glavan. The cast of “Laid in America” also includes Bobby Lee (“MAD TV”), Angela Kinsey (“The Office”), Gerry Bednob (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin”) and Angela Trimbur (“The Final Girls”).

“Laid in America” is produced by Max Gottlieb, under his Fun Group banner focusing on films with digital talent; previously he was a producer on Broadway’s “Rock of Ages.” The film is executive produced by Adam Margules through his Angry Adam Productions and is written and directed by Sam Milman and Peter Vass, the comedy duo behind YouTube channel Bad Weather Films.

“It’s so exciting to work with a new generation of young multihyphenate personalities who have the talent and charisma to become the next wave of international movie stars,” Gottlieb said. “The combination of KSI and Caspar Lee is explosive on-screen and the fans will love it.”

KSI is managed by OP Talent. Caspar Lee is managed by Gleam Futures.
