Comedy Central’s @midnight to Live Stream Entire SXSW Episode On Periscope

Comedy Central’s @midnight game show is breaking new grounds at South by Southwest in Austin Friday night by streaming an entire live show on Periscope. The show, which will air on Periscope at 7:30 p.m. PT, will feature appearances of Doug Benson, Chris Cubas and Arden Myrin, as well as @midnight host Chris Hardwick.

It’s worth noting that the SXSW episode of @midnight is not a simulcast: It’s a special live show, which is taking place at the Parish in Austin, and it won’t be on TV at all. Still, it’s interesting to see Comedy Central embrace Periscope as a live streaming platform, especially as Periscope is getting increased competition from Facebook.

Facebook is looking to pay celebrities to stream live video on its platform, and the social network is also looking to acquire live streaming rights for NFL games as it is trying to grow live video. That’s because Facebook has already seen huge engagement for live video, with viewing sessions lasting three times longer than for recorded video.

For its part, Twitter has been signaling that it is viewing Periscope and live video as a key factor for future growth. Earlier this year, the company promoted Periscope founder and CEO Kayvon Beykpour to be part of Twitter’s executive team.
