Meryl Streep Praises Hillary Clinton, Other Female Pioneers in DNC Speech

PHILADELPHIA — Meryl Streep appeared at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, noting the historic moment of Hillary Clinton’s nomination for president.

“What does it take to be the first female anything?” Streep said. “It takes grit and it takes grace.”

She cited a number of other women who achieved firsts, like Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female Supreme Court justice, and Geraldine Ferrero, the first female on a major party ticket.

“These women share something in common — capacity of mind, fullness of heart and a burning passion for their cause,” Streep said.

She didn’t mention Clinton’s rival, Donald Trump, but said that the Democratic nominee “has taken some fire over 40 years, over her fight for families and children. Where does she get her grit and grace?”

She told the crowd at the Wells Fargo Center that “you people have made history, and you are going to make history again in November, because Hillary Clinton will be our first woman president,” she said.

“She will be the first, but she won’t be the last,” she added.

Streep has been outspoken about politics, but rarely has made campaign appearances.
