Perry, after noting that she has gotten criticism that she should just stick to singing, said, “I am using my voice.”
At the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, she wore a blue cape with sequined lettering reading, “I’m with Madame President.”
“I love the message, when you get knocked down, which everybody does, the message is, ‘Get back up’,” Clinton said in introducing Perry.
Also speaking at the event was Shonda Rhimes. The stars of some of her shows have appeared in ads supporting Clinton.
Perry pledged to back Clinton well before she officially announced her presidential bid. At a CAA event in 2014, when Clinton was still on a book tour, Perry event tweeted that she would write a song for her. She has since performed for Clinton at an event in Iowa in October, 2015, and at the Democratic National Convention in July.
At around the same time that Clinton and Perry were sharing the stage in Philadelphia, Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Reno, where at one point Secret Service agents suddenly rushed him off the stage. Reporters tweeted that one man was taken away after there was some commotion near the stage. “Nobody said it was going to be easy for us, but we will never be stopped,” Trump said after he returned.
Perry’s “Roar” also is the soundtrack for a closing Clinton campaign ad that will be running in battleground states.
