Bob Dylan Will Not Attend the Nobel Prize Ceremony in December

Bob Dylan has sent a “personal letter” to the Swedish Academy informing them he will not attend the Nobel Prize ceremony “due to pre-existing commitments.”

Dylan was named as the recipient of this year’s Nobel prize for literature in October for his life’s oeuvre of lyrics and poetry, however the singer has garnered criticism for his reluctance to publicly accept the award.

The letter comes as another snub to the Swedish Academy, who nonetheless revealed that Dylan felt “very honored indeed” to receive the award, and added that the precedent for Nobel recipients not attending the ceremony doesn’t detract from their achievement.

“In the recent past, several laureates have, for various reasons, been unable to come to Stockholm to receive the prize, among them Doris Lessing, Harold Pinter, and Elfriede Jelinek. The prize still belongs to them, just as it belongs to Bob Dylan,” the Academy said in a statement.

“We look forward to Bob Dylan’s Nobel lecture, which he must give — it is the only requirement — within six months counting from December 10, 2016.”

Dylan is the first American to win the literature prize since Toni Morrison in 1993 and is the first musician to be recognized.

His prize comes with 8 million Swedish kronor, roughly $900,000. The Nobel Prize award ceremony will be held in Stockholm on Dec. 10.
