‘The Walking Dead’ Midseason Preview: What Happened and What’s Going On

We’re less than two weeks away from “The Walking Dead’s” midseason return on Feb. 8, and to whet your appetite for episode nine, aptly titled “What Happened and What’s Going On,” Variety has an exclusive image of one of the show’s most resilient survivors: Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan).

After losing her sole remaining family member, younger sister Beth (Emily Kinney), in the midseason finale, the back half of the season will be a particularly challenging one for Maggie, who reached Grady Memorial Hospital too late to get a chance to say goodbye to her sibling in “Coda.”

In a recent interview, showrunner Scott Gimple told Variety that “things are gonna get super hard” in the final eight episodes of the season: “Every eight episodes it’s a new show, and these eight episodes coming up are very much aligned with that, maybe the starkest example of that so far. We begin in a very dark place and our group is broken by what’s happened. And then things change, but who are they by the time things change? That’s the question. Have they been so hardened that they won’t be able to recognize opportunities in front of them?”

Check out the exclusive image of Maggie and watch the trailer for the midseason premiere below.

And if you can’t get enough “Dead,” AMC will marathon seasons one and two in their entirety on Super Bowl Sunday, beginning February 1 at 10 a.m. with Episode 101, “Days Gone Bye,” and continuing throughout the day, culminating in the season two finale, “Beside the Dying Fire.”

On the midseason premiere — written by Scott M. Gimple and directed by Greg Nicotero — after all the recent trials the group has faced, a slight detour might prove to be the solution they’ve been looking for.

The Walking Dead” returns Sunday, February 8 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
