Turner Broadcasting is hanging on to the AFI Life Achievement Award rights through 2018.

The extension of the deal comes a few weeks before the 43rd annual special, this time feting Steve Martin, which tapes June 4 for broadcast on June 13. The glitzy AFI event airs simultaneously on TNT and TBS, with an encore set for July 30 on Turner Classic Movies.

The AFI deal is in keeping with Turner’s efforts to amp up its roster of specials and live events, just as other major nets are in the hunt for programs that encourage live viewing.

The AFI kudos have bounced around various networks over the years, from CBS, ABC and NBC in the early days to USA Network and TV Land to Turner as of 2013 starting with the Mel Brooks tribute.
