Ted Turner Talks Getting ‘Fired,’ PBS, CBS Lead News & Documentary Emmy Awards

PBS and CBS led the winners at the 36th annual News and Documentary Awards, held Monday night at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall. But lifetime achievement honoree Ted Turner stole the show with an emotional acceptance speech that recounted his “firing” in 2001 from the company he founded.

“I got phased out,” the CNN founder told the crowd. The management of Time Warner, which acquired Turner Broadcasting in 1996, came to him as his contract was about to end.

“They said your contract is going to be up but we want to give you another one,” Turner said. “They said ‘We’ll give you a million dollars a year.’ I said ‘What will my duties be?’ They said ‘nothing.’ I said ‘you take the million dollars and shove it you know where,’ ” he said.

Turner told the crowd that he misses being part of CNN; “I really enjoyed every moment of it,” he said.

PBS’ haul of 17 wins included six wins for “Frontline,” for breaking news and investigative coverage. CBS’ nine wins included six for “60 Minutes.”

NBC (4), Univision (3) and the New York Times (2) rounded out the news orgs that claimed multiple wins.

Here is a complete list of winners:
