Sunday Ratings: Modest Start for ABC’s ‘Bachelor in Paradise’

On the heels of a strong ratings performance for “The Bachelorette” franchise, ABC opened the second season of spinoff series “Bachelor in Paradise” to nothing-special ratings on Sunday.

According to preliminary “live plus same-day” national estimates from Nielsen, a repeat “America’s Funniest Home Videos” on ABC (0.7 rating/3 share in adults 18-49, 3.9 million viewers overall) was followed by the two-hour premiere of “Bachelor in Paradise” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall), which placed second to CBS’ “Big Brother” in its first hour before moving to the broadcast lead from 9 to 10. “Paradise,” which will also be airing two hours on Monday (a regular episode and then a post-show discussion program), was down 0.3 from last year’s opener on a Monday. The Alphabet had been averaging a 1.7 rating in 18-49 from 8 to 10 p.m. the previous six weeks with its successful reality pair of “Celebrity Family Feud” and “Battlebots.” But the 1.1 for “Bachelor in Paradise” on Sunday 0.2 higher than the average for the comparable night a year ago with “Wipeout” and “Rising Star.”

Closing the night for ABC was medical docuseries “Save My Life: Boston Trauma” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall), which was down a tick from last week when it had a stronger “Battlebots” lead-in.

ABC tied for the night’s 18-49 lead with CBS, which won both at 7 p.m. with “60 Minutes” (0.9/4 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall) and 8 p.m. with “Big Brother” (1.8/7 in 18-49, 6.3 million viewers overall). The former was the night’s most-watched program overall, and the latter led in key demos. The Eye filled out the rest of its night with repeats of “Madam Secretary” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) and “CSI: Cyber” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall).

NBC aired two-hour encores of “America’s Got Talent” (0.6/3 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall) and “American Ninja Warrior” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall), with the former’s 10th anniversary special more than doubling the demo delivery the previous week of comedy “Welcome to Sweden,” which was yanked from the sked after its second straight week of tiny ratings. “Warrior” won the 10 o’clock hour in 18-49 (1.0/3).

Fox aired repeats of “Bob’s Burgers” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall average for two episodes), “The Simpsons” (0.7/3 in 18-49, 1.8 million viewers overall), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.4 million viewers overall), “Family Guy” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 1.6 million viewers overall) and “Last Man on Earth” (0.4/1 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC and CBS, 0.9/3; NBC, 0.8/3; Fox, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 5.4 million; ABC, 3.6 million; NBC, 3.2 million; Fox, 1.5 million.
