NBC has given the greenlight to its ninth comedy pilot for the 2015-16 cycle.

“Strange Calls,” from “Cougar Town” exec producer Blake McCormick, follows an affable but unlucky police officer who’s transferred to a rural town and soon realizes, with the help of a strange and elderly night watchman, that the bizarre town may be supernatural.

McCormick will pen the single-cam, 30-minute pilot and also serve as exec producer with “Secrets & Lies'” Aaron Kaplan and Tracey Robertson. Twentieth Century Fox TV, Kapital Entertainment and Hoodlum Entertainment will produce.

The paranormal series is based on an Australian format. The Aussie version, “The Strange Calls,” was created and directed by Daley Pearson and based on his 2011 short film of the same name.

“Strange Calls,” which was previously in development at ABC for the 2014-15 season, marks McCormick’s second pilot pickup this cycle. He is also exec producing CBS’ “Rush Hour” with “Cougar Town” co-creator Bill Lawrence. The project also marks Kaplan’s sixth pilot order this season.
