Ratings: Solid Sampling for NBC Comedy ‘The Carmichael Show’

NBC’s second short-run summer comedy, “The Carmichael Show,” opened to decent numbers on Wednesday, a night otherwise dominated by reality show giants “Big Brother” on CBS and “America’s Got Talent” on NBC. Also of note were season highs for CBS’ “Extant” and CW’s “America’s Next Top Model.”

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “The Carmichael Show” averaged a 1.1 rating/4 share in adults 18-49 and 4.8 million viewers overall in the 9 p.m. slot and a 0.9/3 and 4.1 million at 9:30 — with both episodes down a tick in the demo from the premieres of “Mr. Robinson” for its Aug. 5 bow and in line with the ABC repeat comedies in the time period. Thanks in large part to its lead-in from “America’s Got Talent” (1.6/6 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall), “Carmichael” opened with the highest total-viewer tally of the last 12 comedies to premiere during summer (since CBS’ “Creature Comforts” in 2007). Last night’s “Talent” was a tick higher in the demo and drew about 1.3 more total viewers than the episode that preceded “Mr. Robinson” on the night of its premiere.

NBC, which tied with CBS for the night’s 18-49 lead, won the 10 p.m. hour with “Last Comic Standing” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall), which matched last week’s score.

Elsewhere, CBS’ “Big Brother” (2.0/8 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall) was on par with last week and was again the night’s No. 1 show in 18-49 as well as 25-54 (2.5/8). It was followed by “Extant” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall), which was up 14% from last week (0.84 vs. 0.74) and matched its season high, and a repeat “Criminal Minds” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall), which again built on “Extant” across the board.

At CW, both “America’s Next Top Model” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall) and “A Wicked Offer” (0.3/1 in 18-49, 0.7 million viewers overall) were up, with the former spiking 27% (0.52 vs. 0.41) to hit a near two-year high in the demo (pending updates). The “Model” scores were the best for the network in the Wednesday-at-8 hour since the “Arrow” season finale in mid-May.

Fox’s “MasterChef” (1.4/5 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall) held steady, while “Home Free” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall) lost a tenth.

ABC was down a little from last week with its lineup of repeat comedies “The Middle” (0.9/4 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall), “The Goldbergs” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall), “Modern Family” (1.0/4 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall) and “Black-ish” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.9 million viewers overall) and an original “Celebrity Wife Swap” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 1.2/5; NBC, 1.2/4; Fox, 1.1/4; ABC, 0.8/3; Telemundo, 0.7/3; Univision, 0.7/2; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: CBS and NBC, 5.7 million; Fox, 3.8 million; ABC, 3.2 million; Univision, 1.9 million; Telemundo, 1.7 million.
