Ratings: ‘Big Brother’ Tops Preseason Football to Lead Sunday Night

CBS reality veteran “Big Brother” beat out Fox’s special NFL preseason game as the top broadcast ratings draw on Sunday, a night that also featured the much-anticipated series premiere of AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead,” ratings for which will be revealed later today.

Looking at Sunday’s broadcast action, “Big Brother” (2.2 rating/8 share in adults 18-49, 7.0 million viewers overall) matched its Sunday season high while drawing the show’s largest overall audience on any night this summer; its numbers could be adjusted a bit in the nationals due to an NFL overrun in about 6% of the country that delayed the start of the net’s primetime lineup in some markets. “Big Brother” doubled up its lead-in from “60 Minutes” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall), which was the night’s most-watched broadcast program overall. The net filled out the night with repeats of “Madam Secretary” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall) and “CSI: Cyber” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall).

At ABC, a repeat “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (1.0/4 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall) led into “Bachelor in Paradise” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall), which matched last week’s Sunday season high in the demo while delivering its largest overall audience on the night this summer; it continues to give the network nice time period improvement, rising 63% above what “Wipeout” and “Rising Star” did in the 8-10 p.m. timeslot a year ago (0.8). Capping the night for ABC was the Robin Roberts-hosted special “Katrina: 10 Years After the Storm” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall), which gave ABC its most-watched program in the Sunday-at-10 hour since the NBA Finals in June.

Fox opened with repeats of “Bob’s Burgers” at 7 (0.7/3 in 18-49, 1.9 million viewers overall) and 7:30 (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.3 million viewers overall), followed by an NFL preseason game between the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans (1.6/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall). These preliminary numbers include football in Western markets in the opening hour and are subject to revision in the nationals.

NBC aired repeats of “Hollywood Game Night” at 7 (0.4/2 in 18-49, 1.9 million viewers overall) and 8 (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.5 million viewers overall), followed by a two-hour encore of “American Ninja Warrior” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 1.4/5; ABC and CBS, 1.1/4; NBC, 0.7/2; Univision, 0.5/2; Telemundo, 0.4/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 5.9 million; ABC and Fox, 4.3 million; NBC, 2.5 million; Univision, 1.4 million; Telemundo, 1.0 million.
