After more than six seasons, the wait is finally over. The liars will come face-to-face with “A” on Tuesday night’s summer finale of “Pretty Little Liars,” which star Shay Mitchell describes as the “episode of answers.”
“It all unfolds,” Mitchell told Variety at the Television Critics’ Association press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., alongside series creator Marlene King, who added, “You will find out who ‘A’ is toward the beginning of the episode and then the rest of the episode, it really is the story of ‘A.'”
Aside from meeting “A,” viewers will learn why the mysterious villain has been targeting the girls for all of these years.
“There are so many answers. It’s crazy,” King says, teasing that “PLL” fans will also get the answers to more burning questions — Who is Red Coat? Who is Black Widow? Who killed Toby’s mother? Who killed Bethany? Who hit Alison with a rock the night she went missing?
Though the big reveal comes at the top of the episode, the final moments will prove to be shocking with the liars leaving Rosewood, setting up the five-year time jump that kicks off when the second half of the season is back.
“It’s really, I think, my favorite scene. I was bawling…I couldn’t even yell ‘cut’ at the monitor because I was crying,” the showrunner said. “They go in their separate ways for five years and then an event brings them back to town and we get to discover a lot more about who they are.”
Mitchell weighed in on the series’ new turn, saying viewers will “see where the girls have gone, what they’ve experienced…the girls come back slightly different.”
For the main foursome of ABC Family’s hit, Mitchell says the time jump is a nice change of pace.
“It’s going to be really neat to play closer to my age, be out of high school, be out of the classroom, and I think it’s going to be interesting because as our fans have grown now, so can we, and we’re going to match sort of where they’re at, which is really neat,” she explained to Variety. “I’m excited for everybody to see all the changes that we have. It’s a fresh, new show.”
