Billy Crystal: Neil Patrick Harris Doesn’t Need My Advice To Host The Oscars

Neil Patrick Harris will make his Academy Awards hosting debut next month, and who better to offer him some advice than nine-time Oscar host Billy Crystal?

Crystal spoke with Variety, along with his costar Josh Gad in the upcoming FX comedy “The Comedians,” at Sunday’s Television Critics Assn. Crystal said he has complete confidence in Harris’ ability to pull off the Feb. 22 Oscarcast.

“He doesn’t need my advice,” Crystal said. “He’s done great with the Tonys. Just keep doing what you’re doing. We’ve spoken, and I know he’ll do a great job.”

Gad joked that he and Crystal were angling to grab the Oscar hosting gig next year.

“Billy and I are both campaigning now to co-host the Oscars next year. We’re very excited! It’s to show commitment,” Gad joked, as he grabbed Crystal’s hand. “Well, I don’t know about co-hosting. This show is fine — this is fine,” Crystal quipped of “The Comedians.” “We’re not going to do everything together.”

But after thinking for a moment Crystal had a change of heart.

“We’re going to co-host the Rose Bowl parade, the Christmas parade, the Thanksgiving parade,” he said. “And we’re legal in New York, which is great.”
