The MTV Video Music Awards are going to be a lot more colorful this year. Literally.
For this year, the famous Moonman trophy has gotten a rainbow-styled facelift courtesy of fashion designer Jeremy Scott.
Scott, who is a favorite designer of VMA host Miley Cyrus, colorized MTV’s spaceman statue and added the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers’s iconic TV test pattern bars to the MTV logo. MTV has said that this was done as a way to reference the past way of watching TV as we continue to move into an age of digital consumption.
The Moonman now also sports winged shoes, which is a signature of Scott’s fashion design. Scott added a peace sign necklace meant to ask fans to foster an idea of unity and understanding, while also giving his statue some rock star bling.
Although this isn’t the first time the Moonman has gotten a redesign — for 2013, Brooklyn-based artist KAWS offered his rendition of the statue originally created by Manhattan Design — MTV does not have plans for future remodels.
The MTV Video Music Awards will air live at 9 p.m. on August 30. The Weeknd is slated to perform with additional talent set to be announced at a later date.
