Monday Ratings: NBC’s ‘Running Wild With Bear Grylls’ Hits High

With ABC’s “The Bachelorette” out of the way, NBC took control of the Monday ratings race in key demos behind “American Ninja Warrior” and a season high for lead-out “Running Wild With Bear Grylls.”

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “American Ninja Warrior” averaged a 1.8 rating/7 share in adults 18-49 and 6.3 million viewers overall, down a smidge from last week in the demo but ruling as the night’s No. 1 program. The standout of the night, though, was “Running Wild With Bear Grylls” (1.4/5 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall), which was up 0.2 from last week when it had especially tough reality competition from “The Bachelorette.” The 1.4 rating is just a tick off the series high for “Running Wild,” and it marks a summer series timeslot high for the Peacock, whose six episodes of “The Island” (another Grylls series) to air in the 10 p.m. Monday hour peaked with a 1.2.

Elsewhere, ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” (1.3/5 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) looked better in the second night of its two-night premiere; airing on a traditional “Bachelor” night for the net, it was up 0.2 from Sunday’s modest premiere. It was followed by the debut of discussion show “After Paradise” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall) and “The Whispers” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall), which was down a tick from its prior original to hit a series low.

At CW, “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 2.1 million viewers overall) remains potent and was in line with previous weeks. It was followed by “Whose Line Is It Anyway” (0.4/2 in 18-49, 1.4 million viewers overall) and the series premiere of comedy “Significant Mother” (0.3/1 in 18-49, 0.9 million viewers overall), which outperformed recent half-hour premieres on the network, including this summer’s “Dates” and last year’s “Backpackers” and “Seed.”

Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall) was up a tenth from its low of last week.

CBS aired repeats of “2 Broke Girls” (1.0/4 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall), “Odd Couple” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall), “Scorpion” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall). This was the first summer exposure for “The Odd Couple,” which fared nearly as well as encores of “Mike & Molly” in the same Monday 8:30 p.m. timeslot over the last couple of months.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 1.7/6; ABC, CBS and Fox, 0.9/3; Telemundo and Univision, 0.7/2; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: NBC, 5.6 million; CBS, 5.1 million; ABC, 3.5 million; Fox, 3.1 million; Univision, 1.9 million; CW and Telemundo, 1.6 million.
