Film and TV thesp Maggie Gyllenhaal is making headlines for a story as old as showbiz that has gained new resonance with the recent focus on sexism in Hollywood.
“The Honourable Woman” star told The Wrap, “There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time.” Gyllenhaal said she was recently turned down a role because of her age.
“I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel really bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh,” she said.
This comes at a time when women are speaking out against the double standards in the entertainment industry. Cannes Film Festival’s dress code has lately been deemed sexist after security officials turned away several women for wearing flat shoes instead of high heels.
The Academy Awards red carpet was also used as a platform to spark change with the #AskHerMore campaign earlier this year.
